Finding a job in the labour market is very difficult as you all are aware of, especially in countries like Nigeria where mismanagement of the economy have led to drastic decline in the number of jobs opportunities available for the public. The private sectors also lacks support from the government to thrive, so when such offers a job to the public they expect nothing but the very best despite that their pay isn't enough of a compensation to the services they requires of their employees. So I can aptly say that it is super difficult to get a job and very easy to lost it. Here comes my topic - How to protect your job.
It may seem like this topic is meant for those that already have a job, but no, far from it. You that is currently searching for a job will benefit as much as those with job or even more. Because I discovered that having a knowledge of how to protect a job is key to getting a job. Simply because, your employer wants to know how much you can offer, that's the reason for his assessment whether via an interview or whatever means they employs. So your ability to convince him/her that you can do whatever it takes to protect your job once offered is enough to convince them that you are the right person for the job.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR JOB
Firstly, have this 3 things in your mind:
1. There are many seeking to have your job
2. You can lose your job
3. Your boss is watching you.
1. There are many unemployed people who are seeking to have your job every day, in fact they even speak to your employer about it even though they know that someone is already have that job. So you must have it in mind that your boss is waiting for you to slip up with error and you are gone.
2. Yes, you can definitely lose your job because the job isn't yours but your employer's. You are having that job because they feel like you are currently the right person for the job. So whenever you fall down the radar they won't hesitate to have the best, sadly, in expense of you.
3. While you are trying to protect your job your boss at the same time is trying to protect his/her company, so they are constantly watching you as well as all their employees, they will not retain you in the company for anything less than you giving them your best that is equivalent to their expectations. Not even the relationship that you've over the years working with them can safe you from losing your job.
To safe your job you must:
1. Be flexible
2. Committed
3. Honest
1. You must know that your company must make series of changes to keep them in the same wavelength or higher than their competitors. Some of this changes are affected by technology advances. You may be best qualified for the job when you are employed, but due to changes in the company's policies and the day to day processes, you may fall far behind the list of qualification. Once that happens, your job is at stake. So to protect your job you must be willing to research not only within the scope of your company standards but above it. You need to be aware of what is nationally or globally acceptable for someone who have your job. And you must work very hard to influence the changes to your life by adapting to them all. This way, you will live above your company standards and you can be able to push them ahead. Your boss will see in you someone who is above the position you occupy in the company - on comes the promotion. Kudos.
2. As a human, there must be many things competing to have your time - family obligations, friends, social networking, religious responsibilities etc. While you must work hard to give the proper share of your time to these things, you must equally do the same to you job and add to it, by limiting time for the less important stuffs to have more time for the more important. But don't undermine the power of rest and pleasure - they give you the psychological boost needed to be productive and consistent in what you do including your job. So as often as possible, create time for relaxation and comfort.
3. Honesty is viewed as an outdated quality in the mordern world, your colleagues can tell you that your boss isn't honest enough to stick with his policies so you can't be honest when a pleasant opportunity that requires a little treachery to grab presents itself in a platter of gold. But that's not true. Honesty remains the most effective quality in building a professional or family relationship. The opposite of honesty can destroys any relationship. It doesn't take much for your boss to discover traces of dishonesty due to the amount of effort needed by a devious person to hide on under the radar of honesty. So be honest in all you do and let your hard work pay you instead of you paying for dishonesty with your job.
I believed that you have gained some insight into what it takes to safe a job in the modern world and in a country suffering from economy mismanagement where it is more than difficult to find a job. Give this post a kind rating please.
